Each hazmat employer must:
- ensure that each hazmat employee is trained and tested;
- certify that each hazmat employee has been trained and tested; and
- develop and retain records of current training for each hazmat employee.
Once initial training has been completed, the hazmat employee must go through recurrent training at least once every three years. (Air carrier employees must be retrained at least every two years, per 14 CFR.) It is the responsibility of a hazmat employer to ensure its hazmat employees are thoroughly instructed in the current provisions of the HMR.
